This StoryLogian documentary pulls on the thread of Hagar's story through theology, history, and the testimonies of women who have lived it... women who were sent away, cast aside, survived the wilderness, and discovered they, too, were seen.

ABOUT THIS FILM

Hagar is a contemplative documentary that “steps into the” the biblical story of Hagar from the Hebrew Bible while exploring its profound resonance in the lives of women today. Faithful to the account in the Book of Genesis, the film traces Hagar’s journey from servant in Abraham’s household to a mother cast into the wilderness with her son, Ishmael. In the desolation of the desert, she encounters the God who sees her, naming Him “El Roi,” the God who sees.
Through a meditative visual style inspired by Cinema Divina, the film interweaves the ancient narrative with modern voices and imagery. Women from diverse cultural backgrounds embody Hagar’s presence across time, revealing how her story echoes in experiences of displacement, survival, motherhood, and divine encounter today.
Hagar Teaser
Shot amid sweeping desert landscapes and moments of quiet reflection, Hagar invites viewers into a contemplative journey where scripture, lived experience, and spiritual formation converge. The result is not simply a retelling of an ancient story, but an invitation to encounter the God who sees the unseen.
Hi, I'm Dr. Shonda Carter
Director, Producer, Writer, & Editor
Some people wait for permission to tell stories. I build camera-ready rebellion instead.

I’m the writer, director, producer, and editor behind Hagar, which means every frame, every silence, every emotional cut in this film was dusted for God's fingerprints. This documentary wasn’t made from a distance. It was shaped from obsession (in the ADHD world, we call it hyperfocus), responsibility, and the need to tell a story that refuses to be softened for comfort.

I created Hagar to explore the tension between survival, identity, faith, memory, and what happens when people are forced to carry histories too heavy to name out loud. This film lives in the spaces mainstream storytelling usually avoids — the complicated, human, uncomfortable truth.

As a filmmaker and storylogian, I’m drawn to stories that feel lived-in instead of polished. I care less about perfection and more about emotional honesty. My goal is never to make something “safe.” The goal is to make something that stays with you after the screen goes black.Because Bible stories shouldn’t just inform people....They should haunt us a little.

We are in the pre-production phase of waiting on "yeses" and scheduling interviews. We will keep this section updated as we pray that it will not become a revolving door.
If you feel a personal connection with the story of Hagar, I would love to hear your story.
